You Only Get 18 Summers

Family trip to Stockholm,Sweden

The Clock Moves Faster Than We Think
Have you ever heard the saying, "You only get 18 summers with your children"? It's a simple thought, but it can stop you in your tracks.

Eighteen summers may sound like a lot when your children are little. Then suddenly they are heading to college, starting internships, getting their first jobs, building relationships, and creating lives of their own. The family calendar gets harder to coordinate, and those carefree weeks when everyone was available at the same time become much harder to find. That is one reason I believe family travel can be such a meaningful investment.

Make Memories, Not Just Plans
A family vacation isn't just about seeing a new destination. It is about having time together when everyone can put down the phones, step away from work and school, and actually enjoy one another.

Years later, you may not remember every restaurant or hotel, but you will remember watching your children swim in the ocean, exploring a new city together, laughing over dinner, or seeing a grandchild do something for the very first time.

Those are the moments that become family stories.

Bring the Generations Together
Multi-generational travel has become one of my favorite ways to bring families together. Grandparents, parents, children, and grandchildren can travel as one group while still having plenty of space to enjoy the vacation in their own way.

The beauty of multi-generational travel is that it doesn't have to look the same for everyone.
A cruise can be a wonderful option because there is something for everyone.
Grandparents might enjoy a quiet morning; parents can have some time to themselves, and the kids can find activities and friends their own age. Then everyone can come together for dinner, an excursion, or a day exploring a new port.

A Villa Can Feel Like Home
Another option is renting a villa or private home. A shared living space, multiple bedrooms, and often a kitchen or outdoor area create a home-away-from-home atmosphere. If you do not want to cook, you can hire a private chef to take care of meals.

One family might spend the morning at the beach while another heads into town, and everyone can reunite later for dinner. It allows families to be together without requiring everyone to follow the same schedule.

Give the Gift of Travel
And perhaps the best part? A family vacation can make an extraordinary gift. Instead of another toy, gadget, or sweater that may eventually be forgotten, consider giving your children or grandchildren an experience they will remember for years.

A trip to celebrate a milestone birthday, graduation, or anniversary, or simply the fact that everyone is together, can become part of your family story.

Imagine telling your grandchildren, "For your graduation, we're taking the whole family to Italy." That is a gift they will talk about for years.

Planning for Everyone
Of course, traveling with multiple generations takes thoughtful planning. Different ages have different interests, energy levels, budgets, and expectations. The key is creating a trip where everyone has something to look forward to - and no one feels as though they have to do everything together every minute.

As a travel advisor, I love helping families work through these details. Finding the right destination, accommodations, transportation, and experiences can make the difference between simply taking a trip and creating a wonderful family memory.

Don't Wait for the Perfect Time
Because ultimately, the destination is only part of the journey. The real gift is the time. We can't stop our children from growing up. We can't make the summers last longer or guarantee that everyone will always be available. But we can be intentional about how we use the time we have.

So, if you are counting the summers – or simply wishing you had more time together – maybe it is time to start planning that trip.

If I can help you plan a meaningful family getaway, please get in touch - I would love to help you create a trip everyone will remember.
The suitcase will eventually be unpacked. The photographs are stored in our phones. But the memories you make together can last a lifetime.
