Artistry in Full Bloom
Justis Truitt's Reflections Contest Success
Justis is a 7th grade student at International School.
Justis Truitt, a seventh-grade student at The International School in Bellevue, placed second in the Washington State Reflections Art Contest. Her painting, "Requiem for a Tree," which was inspired by the illegal felling of the beloved Sycamore Gap Tree near Hadrian's Wall in England, is a beautiful canvas of colors and carefully curated designs that portray Truitt’s natural talent for storytelling through her art.
“For the longest time I have been making art, beginning as a baby at three months until today. I have found art to be a unique way to express myself. I have been making art since before I could read, so in a way, it is my first language,” Truitt said.
The Washington State Reflections Competition receives hundreds of submissions each year, but these numbers did not scare Truitt, who saw this not only as a way to share her talent and create something new but to make a difference as well. “My Mom showed me the information about the contest, and I got very excited and began working on it. I love that this is a way for other people to see my work, and possibly be inspired to change. Art should leave a memory and an impact on people, and I hope my art can accomplish that,” Truitt said.
Just as her favorite artist, Vincent van Gogh, inspired many, Truitt’s talent has begun making waves in her community and is something to look up to. Despite the tough competition, she came out on top of the contest and plans to continue submitting her art in the future. “I don't have the words to describe how happy and surprised I was to do so well,” Truitt said.
Truitt draws inspiration from fellow artists, but her love for nature predominantly influences her creativity. Her outlook on the world around her influences the authenticity of her work and you can see her caring attitude in each painting she produces. “I want people to know that loving the earth is to love yourself. Connecting with nature is a calming way to relax from school or work. I hope my art can help connect people with nature,” Truitt said.
Justis Truitt hopes to continue to grow as an artist and create change, and her work is sure to be seen in galleries far and wide in the years to come. We congratulate her on her accomplishment!
