The “Michelin Star” Cookout Competition
Friends, Feasts, and Fierce (But Friendly) Rivalry!

Who knew a little banter over steaks could spark an annual culinary showdown? It all began last year when a few close friends, fueled by good-natured teasing, decided to put their cooking skills to the test. “We’ve always had parties together and volunteered to bring food,” Judy Petrie explained. “Somehow it turned into a contest on who can make the best steak — and now, it’s evolving into an annual event.”
The first spontaneous cook-off birthed what’s now become an eagerly anticipated tradition among friends. And somehow, we found ourselves lucky enough to snag an invitation. Last year’s cookout was hosted at Sophie Sun and Fang Huang’s home on Hunts Point, where the challenge was simple: the perfect steak. Tensions ran deliciously high as four teams went spatula-to-spatula to claim the coveted “Champion” ring (and bragging rights for an entire year). In the end, it was Judy Petrie of Mercer Island who walked away victorious, proving that her steak sizzled just a little bit more than the rest.
Fast forward to 2024 where things have become even more intense — and fancy! This year, the event came with a new name: The Michelin Star Cookout, and the stakes (pun totally intended) were even higher. This time, hosted at Ping and Joe Liu’s beautiful home, a new challenge was born! Each team was required to pair an appetizer with a drink.
The 2024 Teams & Dishes:
- Judy Petrie & Dave (Sous Chef Extraordinaire)
Appetizer: Filet wrapped in delicate Japanese radish sprouts
Drink: Paper Planes
(Judy wasn’t about to let her 2023 victory slip away without a fight!) - John & Autumn Manning
Appetizer: Grilled beef tenderloin crostini with béarnaise sauce
Drink: Grapefruit Gash (that’s a story...) - Chef Joe Liu with Mixologist Susie Goldman
Appetizer: Creamy lobster bisque

Drink: Daisai Sake
This year’s unexpected twist came courtesy of John Manning, who was fully prepared to wow the judges with his cocktail — until disaster struck. In what can only be described as a kitchen nightmare, John managed to slice his fingers not once, but twice! With blood (and perhaps a few choice words) splattered, John had no choice but to bow out of the competition leaving his wife, Autumn, to fend for herself while he reluctantly drove himself to urgent care. Though officially disqualified, he was generous enough to pour a few of us a taste of his delicious drink when he came back later that evening. It might not have won him the title, but hey, at least he still has all (or most) of his fingers!
Being part of the judges’ panel again this year, I can confirm that the competition was fiercer than ever. Each team put their heart into their dishes, and it showed. From the meticulous plating to the perfectly paired drinks, the judges had a nearly impossible task of choosing a winner.
When it came down to it, Christine and Alex Park’s Gujeolpan stood out not only for its flavor but also for its artistic presentation. It was a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, leaving everyone, including the judges, in awe and naming them the official champions of 2024! If there’s one thing that’s consistent year after year, it’s the friendly ribbing among these competitors. The camaraderie is as important as the cooking, and it’s clear that these gatherings are about more than just who takes home the ring. It’s about celebrating community and a love for food.
So, what’s next for this dynamic group of chefs? Perhaps a dessert competition, or maybe a full-course challenge? One thing’s for sure: whatever it is, it’ll be filled with great food, and I will be more than happy to throw my name in the hat to be a judge again. We want to thank everyone who participated and made this a wonderful evening amongst friends. Until we eat again.
