The Calico With Character
For Marcia Holland, home has taken a few different forms over the years—from more than three decades spent in Medina with her husband, just off Evergreen Point Road, to a thoughtfully chosen townhouse in Bellevue as they downsized for their next chapter. It was after her husband passed away, however, that Marcia’s home gained a new and unexpected heartbeat: a calico cat named Lucy Ricardo.
Lucy is almost five years old and instantly memorable, thanks to her vibrant coloring and her name. Inspired by the iconic I Love Lucy character, Lucy Ricardo earned her title because of her striking red hair. As a calico, she boasts about four different colors, but red is the dominant hue—especially around her face—making her a truly colorful calico in both looks and personality.
From the start, Lucy made her presence known. “She was so wild at first,” Marcia admits, laughing now. In those early days, Lucy’s boundless energy had Marcia wondering if she’d made a mistake—and she even considered giving her back to a friend. But time, patience, and plenty of play helped Lucy settle in. Today, that once-wild kitten has grown into a sweet, affectionate companion Marcia says she “wouldn’t give up for anything.”
Lucy loves anything she can bat around, chase, throw, or catch. Her playful streak is matched by her social nature. She enjoys people and usually greets visitors with curiosity and confidence, though there are a few individuals she remains cautiously unsure about. Friends often comment on her beauty, but it’s her humor and warmth that leave the biggest impression.
At home, Lucy is a constant presence—especially in the mornings. She wakes Marcia with gentle head butts and what Marcia fondly calls “kitty hugs,” always eager to curl up in her lap when the opportunity arises. While Lucy may still operate on her own terms, the bond between them runs deep. “I got her right after my husband died, and she has saved my life,” Marcia shares. Lucy’s companionship, affection, and quiet routines have brought comfort and joy during a time of loss. “It’s almost like having a child around,” she says. “I don’t know what I’d do without her.”
For anyone considering a pet like Lucy, Marcia’s advice is simple: “Get one. If you want a sweet little companion, they’re a great buddy to have around—especially if you need someone there with you.”
