Celebrating 20 Years of Community at 520 Bar & Grill

For two decades, 520 Bar & Grill has been more than just a restaurant in Old Bellevue, it has been a gathering place where friendships formed, celebrations unfolded, and community connections deepened. As the beloved neighborhood restaurant celebrated its 20th anniversary this past May, owner Joseph Brazen reflected on the journey that transformed a simple idea into one of Bellevue’s most enduring hospitality destinations.

The inspiration for 520 Bar & Grill began long before the restaurant opened its doors. During trips to Ireland with close friends, Joseph and his wife, Randi, were struck by the warmth and energy of Dublin’s pub culture. It wasn’t simply about food or drinks; it was about creating a welcoming place where people gathered and felt connected. When they returned home, they believed Bellevue needed that same sense of community.

At the time, Old Bellevue looked very different than it does today. Main Street was quieter, with limited restaurant and nightlife activity. In 2001, the Brazens purchased the building as a home base for their growing residential real estate business, but they soon recognized an opportunity to create something more for the neighborhood — a welcoming gathering place that reflected the sense of community they loved about Bellevue. They moved their real estate offices upstairs, and on May 20th, 2006, 520 Bar & Grill officially opened. Today, they still operate all three of their family businesses — including Central Bar + Restaurant — out of that building.

The name “520” itself carries special meaning for longtime Bellevue locals. In real estate terminology the “Area 520” refers to the neighborhoods west of Interstate 405 stretching toward Lake Washington, the very community where the Brazens live, work, and sell homes. To residents, the name immediately signaled that 520 was “their place”. Over the years, the restaurant has steadily became synonymous with Old Bellevue itself. What Joseph remembers most from that first year was how quickly the community embraced the restaurant. Guests were drawn not only to the menu, but to the atmosphere being a place where they could relax, reconnect, and feel welcomed.

Over the past 20 years, 520 Bar & Grill has become woven into the lives of countless guests. Joseph estimates the restaurant has hosted everything from first dates and engagement parties to weddings, anniversaries, and celebrations of life, and Randi believes at least 17 couples met and fell in love at 520. Legendary Halloween parties became neighborhood traditions, while generations of local students gained their first hospitality experience working there.

The restaurant also became deeply tied to many Bellevue traditions. Located directly on Main Street, 520 sits on the “50-yard line” for the Bellevue Homecoming Parade and regularly hosts pregame and postgame gatherings for Bellevue High School football games. It has become a favorite destination for Seahawks and University of Washington viewing parties. Many coaches, athletes, and longtime local families from Area 520 consider it a second home. Bellevue High graduate and KJR sports radio personality, Dave “Softy” Mahler,0 has even broadcast his live Thursday afternoon show from 520 for over 15 years during football season alongside former Seahawks head coach and Hall of Famer Mike Holmgren.

Early on, the team established strong operational systems that helped guide the business through years of growth and change —discipline that would later prove invaluable during one of the greatest challenges in the restaurant’s history: the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many restaurant owners, the Brazen family faced enormous uncertainty. Rather than step back, they adapted quickly by launching takeout services and transforming their parking lot into an outdoor dining space. What began as a temporary survival strategy eventually evolved into one of Bellevue’s most recognizable patios. Thanks to collaboration with the City of Bellevue, the outdoor dining area became a permanent part of the restaurant’s identity.

Joseph believes the restaurant’s longevity comes down to one thing: authentic hospitality. Bellevue may have transformed into a rapidly growing international city filled with high-rises and technology companies, but people still crave places where relationships matter and where they feel genuinely welcomed. "In many ways," Joseph says, "520 became a bridge between the 'old Bellevue' and the 'new Bellevue'.”

The anniversary is especially meaningful for the Brazen family. All three of their daughters worked in the restaurant growing up learning leadership, hospitality, and the importance of community along the way. Today, Joey serves as General Manager of 520 Bar & Grill, Cody is the General Manager of Central Bar + Restaurant, and Taylor is a partner at The Brazens at Windermere Real Estate. Even two of their husbands — Seth Tagge and Phil Bailey — have worked at 520 over the years. Together, the family’s businesses continue to shape a lasting Bellevue legacy, now shared with eight grandchildren representing the next generation.

As 520 Bar & Grill celebrates 20 years, Joseph and Randi remain incredibly grateful to the customers, employees, and community members who helped shape the restaurant’s story. “More than anything, we want people to feel welcome, comfortable, and genuinely cared for,” Joseph says. “Thank you for allowing us to serve you and become part of your lives and memories.”
