For over seven decades, Boys & Girls Clubs of Bellevue (BGCB) has served as an important response to those challenges. More than an after-school provider, the organization functions as a critical support system for families and a place of consistency for children navigating a variety of circumstances. At the center of that work are BGCB leaders Ramona Campbell and Stephanie Burr, whose commitment to youth development stems not only from professional experience, but also from a strong personal passion for helping young people thrive.

Mona’s connection to the Club’s mission began in childhood. Growing up amid significant instability provided an early understanding of what it means for a young person to feel unsupported and unseen. Those experiences ultimately became the foundation for a career dedicated to ensuring children have access to safety, opportunity, and belonging. 

Stephanie first arrived at the Club through a college internship. What began as a graduation requirement evolved into a 25-year career serving youth. Today, the connection has become especially meaningful, with their own children participating in Club programs and eventually working alongside staff who once helped shape their childhood experiences. Though their journeys were different, both Mona and Stephanie arrived at the same conclusion: the presence of caring adults and stable environments can have a profound impact on a child's future. 

That perspective becomes especially important in a community where need is often underestimated. More than 4,500 Bellevue School District students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, highlighting the gap between household income and what it actually costs to raise a family in King County. At the same time, affordable housing shortages and the soaring cost of childcare continue to place significant pressure on working families. 

The realities for some are often revealed through small but powerful moments, and Stephanie recounts a story that has stayed with her over the years. “I’ll never forget taking a group of our members to swim lessons that were generously provided at no cost. When the kids arrived, however, they were wearing t‑shirts and shorts because their families could not afford swim gear. What makes the Club special is that we meet kids during some of the most difficult chapters of their lives and help them turn those experiences into something surmountable. Repeatedly, we see how this transforms into confidence, resilience, and success as kids grow. Watching that full circle moment never gets old.” 

For Boys & Girls Clubs of Bellevue, however, the impact extends far beyond programs and activities. In families experiencing enormous amounts of stress, children live with constant uncertainty, often not knowing where they would sleep from one night to the next. Yet when they arrive at the Club, that burden seems to lift, if only temporarily. At the Club, these kids laugh with friends, participate in activities, and experience something every child deserves, the freedom to simply be a kid. The Club cannot solve every challenge waiting beyond its doors. What it can provide is equally valuable—a safe environment, trusted relationships, and a sense of belonging during a difficult period in these children's lives. 

Years later, the effects of that support often become visible in unexpected ways. Former members frequently return as young adults to reconnect with the staff who made a difference in their lives. Those reunions serve as reminders that youth development is rarely defined by a single program or event. More often, it is shaped by years of encouragement, consistency, and belief from adults who show up day after day. Sometimes, the most significant impact comes from something remarkably simple, a caring adult who sees a young person's potential and refuses to give up on them. That philosophy extends beyond the children served by the organization and into its approach to leadership. 

Drawing from backgrounds that include both nonprofit and for-profit leadership, these leaders emphasize the importance of balancing operational excellence with human connection. Financial stewardship, strategic planning, and long-term sustainability are essential to ensuring programs remain available for future generations. Equally important is investing in the staff members who build meaningful relationships with young people every day. The organization's success depends on adults who provide structure, empathy, and consistency. Supporting those professionals, empowering them as leaders, and creating a culture centered on relationships has become a defining element of BGCB's approach. 

As Bellevue continues to grow, the importance of that work is likely to increase. The city is evolving rapidly, bringing new opportunities alongside new pressures for families.
