Get to Know The Austin Dentist
When Dr. Matthew Horne opened The Austin Dentist in 2005, he did so with a clear vision: to create a dental practice built on trust, precision, and genuine connection. From the start, the focus was on quality over speed, relationships over transactions, and care that felt thoughtful rather than rushed. Like many small businesses, the practice began simply. The original office was a small, two-chair space on Westbank Drive across from Breed & Co., with one employee, Mia, who handled just about everything. Those early days required patience, persistence, and a belief in doing things the right way from the very beginning.
Dr. Horne remembers the pressure of starting from scratch with nothing but that vision. “My first patient was my girlfriend at the time, and now wife. I had to make sure the equipment worked,” he jokes. More than 20 years later, those early experiences still shape how Dr. Horne practices dentistry today. What began as a leap of faith has grown into a trusted Austin practice known for being personal, precise, and refreshingly stress-free, without ever losing sight of why it started in the first place.
From the beginning, Dr. Horne believed dentistry should be done thoughtfully and carefully, with real relationships at the center. Quality over speed. Long-term health over short-term fixes. Patients treated like people, not appointments. That mindset was shaped long before The Austin Dentist opened its doors. After earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Louisiana State University, Dr. Horne received the
Navy Health Professions Scholarship and completed an advanced residency in San Diego. He then served four years as a Navy dentist, where attention to detail and doing things right the first time were essential.
His background set the tone for how Dr. Horne practices dentistry today. The years he spent in the Navy reinforced discipline, precision, and a responsibility to do things right the first time. Those values continue to guide his work.
The mission at The Austin Dentist has always been simple: to help patients achieve lasting oral health while feeling confident, informed, and genuinely cared for every step of the way. Today, that mission shows up in the way the team practices every day. Great dentistry, in their view, is not just about technical skill. It requires time, focus, thoughtful planning, and making sure patients feel at ease. Appointments are never rushed, questions are always welcomed, and care plans are built collaboratively, with trust as the foundation. Oral health affects far more than a smile. It influences comfort, confidence, sleep, nutrition, and overall well-being. That belief drives everything the team does, from preventive care to full-mouth cosmetic makeovers. When patients understand their options and feel empowered in the process, outcomes are better and relationships last.
A key part of that commitment is ongoing education. Dr. Horne has completed extensive advanced training at the Kois Center, one of the most respected institutions for evidence-based dentistry and comprehensive treatment planning. He is also a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, an honor achieved by only a small percentage of general dentists and one that reflects hundreds of hours of continuing education. One of the ways this expertise shows up in everyday care is through the practice’s Total Mouth Wholeness Program. Rather than treating dental problems as isolated, the program looks at the entire oral system, including gum health, bite alignment, airway considerations, and how oral health connects to overall wellness. By identifying root causes and creating personalized, long-term plans, the team delivers care that is more comfortable, more predictable, and designed to last.
Technology also plays an important role, always with patient comfort in mind. The Austin Dentist has invested in advanced tools like the Solea Laser, which allows many soft- and hard-tissue procedures to be completed with little to no anesthesia. For patients, this often means less anxiety, minimal discomfort, and faster healing, especially appreciated by children and adults who feel nervous about dental visits.
At its heart, The Austin Dentist is about people. The practice is honored to serve the Austin community and grateful for the trust families place in the team year after year. Through thoughtful planning, advanced training, and a commitment to whole-person care, Dr. Horne and his team continue to provide dentistry that is consistent, precise, and centered on what matters most: the patient.
From that early two-chair office to a thriving Austin practice, the heart of The Austin Dentist has not changed. Thoughtful care. Trusted relationships. Dentistry done the right way, one patient at a time.
