The Lighting Showroom

How do you know what light is best for your needs?

Have you enjoyed a great conversation and wonderful meal at the Copper Door or T-bones restaurants?  If so, you have experienced it basking in the warm glow of Doug’s lighting design work!  Today, Doug Brown, the founder and proprietor of The Lighting Showroom in Bedford, NH, discusses the temperature of lighting.

First, a bit of information about how lighting is measured and classified:
As most people are aware, the color of lighting is measured using K units.  But what is a K? K is a unit on the Kelvin scale, which measures thermodynamic temperature and is named after William Thomson (Lord Kelvin).  Lighting generally runs from 1500 to 8000K.

How do you know what light is best for your needs?
Although picking the perfect lighting certainly has a personal preference component, Doug recommends using warm white (2700-3000K) in your living areas and bedrooms, neutral white (3100-4500K) in your bathrooms and kitchens, and cool white in your home office.

Is this just a matter of personal preference?
The simple answer is NO!  Doug's lighting recommendations are backed by science.  Studies have shown that warmer lighting feels welcoming and presents a feeling of relaxation.  Whereas cooler lighting promotes alertness and clarity.

Doug and The Lighting Showroom are celebrating 18 years of serving the lighting needs of individuals and businesses throughout New England. Doug has 20+ years of experience in the lighting industry. A natural problem solver, he can find the perfect solution and lighting color for any lighting need.  Working with individuals, architects, and interior designers, the showroom offers both residential and commercial customers everything from a single table lamp to lighting for your entire home—inside and out—including landscape and accent lighting.
