When they decided to establish their vineyard in Moraga, they didn't simply plant vines. After successful corporate careers, they became students of the craft, immersing themselves in viticulture, soil science, wine chemistry, and sustainable farming. They believed that understanding the science behind the vineyard was just as important as appreciating its beauty, and that commitment to learning continues to shape Captain Vineyards today.

Their approach has always favored purpose over production. Rather than expanding distribution or chasing volume, the Captains chose to remain a small, appointment-only estate winery where every vintage reflects the character of the land. Their winemaking philosophy embraces minimal intervention, trusting the terroir and allowing the grapes to speak for themselves.

Environmental stewardship has never been a separate initiative. It has always been part of the plan. The vineyard operates with solar power, embraces dry farming whenever conditions allow, conserves water, composts organic material, and continually looks for ways to reduce its environmental footprint. Their efforts have earned statewide recognition, including the Cool California Climate Leader Award from the California Air Resources Board and California EPA, the Sustainable Contra Costa Leadership Award, California Green Business and Pollution Prevention Awards, and multiple WaterSMART Awards. As members of the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF), they continue to support farming practices that protect both the land and the communities that depend on it.

Award-winning wines have followed, but accolades have never been the goal. Instead, the Captains have built a reputation for authenticity, quality, and a belief that responsible farming produces exceptional wine.

That same philosophy extends beyond the vineyard. Although Captain Vineyards is open by appointment only, Sal and Susan have generously shared their property over the years through charitable events, educational programs, and community gatherings. Their commitment to Moraga was recognized when the Moraga Chamber of Commerce named them Business Persons of the Year, honoring not only their entrepreneurial spirit but also their lasting contributions to the community.

The vineyard has also been home in the truest sense of the word. Sal and Susan raised their four children among the vines, where family life followed the rhythm of each growing season. Today, that legacy continues as their youngest daughter, Sara, returns to the property with her own vision, building on the values that have always defined Captain Vineyards.
