Memorial Day provided an opportunity for our community to gather in remembrance, reflect on the sacrifices of our nation's heroes, and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.
Appreciation for America and those who serve was instilled in me from a young age. Throughout my childhood, I would tag along with my grandfather to the Burwood Cemetery and join the Escalon VFW for a Memorial Day ceremony. This tradition is important to me because Memorial Day isn’t just another day; it is set aside to honor those who gave their lives for our country.
The Ripon Memorial Day service was similar to the ones I have attended over the years. So many in the community came together to support and honor the military at the Ripon Cemetery. We sang Amazing Grace and God Bless America. A bell rang in remembrance of each Riponite who died in past wars. I was inspired by Mayor Gary Barton’s powerful speech in which he recognized the cost of freedom throughout history. In each war that the U.S. has fought, lives were laid down. Those who attended the ceremony heard the last words of the speech “...land of the free and home of the brave.” It is an honor and blessing to live in America. Next time you see the flag or think of the red, white, and blue, remember the sacrifices and bravery of those who have served us.
