Skin Health in the Texas Sun: Prevention and Mohs Surgery

Dr. Harrison Nguyen and Trishann Nguyen, PA-C

As summer arrives in Riverstone, the vibrant Texas sun brings both outdoor fun and a serious responsibility for skin health. With May recognized as Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, it is the perfect time to audit sun protection habits and understand the advanced treatments available right here in our community.

The most effective way to manage skin cancer is to prevent it from developing. For those spending afternoons at the pool or local parks, the best defense is a proactive one. Apply SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, reapplying every two hours if swimming or sweating. Avoid peak sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses. While daily sun protection is vital, an annual professional skin exam is the foundation of long-term prevention. If you observe a new or changing mole, please contact our office to schedule a priority evaluation.

When in doubt, follow the ABCDE method as a visual aid to help patients identify what "unusual" looks like:

Even with diligent protection, a skin cancer diagnosis can occur. Mohs surgery stands as the gold standard for treating basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and specific types of melanoma. Dr. Harrison Nguyen performs this highly specialized technique at Harrison Dermatology, offering patients a cure rate of up to 99% for new skin cancers.

The process involves removing the cancer layer by layer and performing an immediate microscopic evaluation in an on-site lab. This systematic approach ensures the complete removal of malignancy while maximizing the preservation of healthy tissue, a factor vital for maintaining the appearance and function of sensitive areas like the face, head, and neck.

What to Expect During Mohs Surgery
The procedure is performed entirely in-office using local anesthesia, allowing patients to remain awake and typically drive themselves to and from the appointment. Dr. Nguyen removes thin layers of skin and examines each under a microscope until the area is confirmed cancer-free. Once cleared, the site is repaired, usually involving two layers of stitches that are removed after two weeks.
The entire process generally takes four to six hours. While tissue is processed in the lab, a temporary bandage is applied, and patients are welcome to step out for coffee or food nearby. There are no specific diet or medication restrictions beforehand, though avoiding heavy physical activity is recommended for two weeks following the surgery.
